Innovation partnership on the road to urban climate neutrality
The partnership is focusing on joint research and development activities in areas such as the implementation of “Morgenstadt City Labs” for system research and targeted measures for Korean cities and regions, the development of joint technology and research roadmaps for circular urban districts — for example, in the field of carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) — and the initiation of joint research and innovation projects as part of South Korea’s accession to the EU research program Horizon from 2025 onward.
“This partnership is an important step that will enable us to tackle urban challenges for cities in Germany and Korea at the same time. By combining our expertise and innovative approaches, we will be able to develop sustainable, future-oriented solutions that will improve the quality of life in Korean cities considerably,” said Dr. Steffen Braun, deputy institute director of Fraunhofer IAO. In-cheol Jung, CEO of Maeil Business TV, added: “We feel honored to be signing this declaration of intent with Fraunhofer IAO. We will strive to ensure that this declaration of intent delivers real success with regard to the climate-friendly transformation of major cities in Korea.”
The partnership’s additional objectives include establishing multinational networks between Korean companies, city administrations and research institutions, holding joint specialist conferences and facilitating international scientific communication.
