But while the potential has been identified, is implementation still lagging behind? Artificial Intelligence and machine learning are key technologies for the future of Germany as a digital location. However, their rollout and implementation in practical, financially-viable applications necessitate a strategic transformation on various levels. As part of the Cyber Valley consortium, the AI Progress Innovation Center at the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA and the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO helps businesses to develop innovative AI applications and human-centric AI solutions at the interface between application-oriented science and research excellence.
Understanding technology, empowering people, shaping processes
With the “Learning Systems” study series, the AI progress Innovation Center offers an insight into the potential and practical application possibilities of AI. The ten publications introduce overarching AI topics such as reliability, explainable AI (xAI) and cloud-based platforms. They also examine in detail application scenarios and implementation strategies. The publications focus on the following areas: research, construction, production and customer service. The study series covers the following publications and focus topics:
- Cloud-based AI platforms
Opportunities and limits of services for machine learning as a service
- Human-centric AI applications in production
Practical experiences and guidelines on operational implementation strategies
- Reliable AI
Using AI in safety-critical industrial applications
- AI in construction
Application possibilities for the planning, implementation and operation of construction projects
- Explainable AI in practice
Application-orientedBased eEvaluation of xAI proceduresMethods
- AI in customer data management
Insights into potential application scenarios
- AI to prevent identity fraud
From customer identification to prevention of identity fraud
- Customer service with a human touch
Developing smart systems for user-centered customer interactions
- Sensitive technology
Practical application of neuro-ergonomics and brain-computer interfaces
- AI for knowledge
Algorithms, models and technology to support research
Dr. Matthias Peissner, Head of the AI Progress Innovation Center at Fraunhofer IAO, says: “We are pursuing the goal of developing AI applications for and with businesses that people can trust and accept. Only when people can intuitively and confidently interact and work with new technologies can their potential be optimally exploited.” Because of this, the study series places a particular focus on issues such as reliability, explainable AI (xAI), technologies and implementation strategies. Prof. Marco Huber, Head of the AI Progress Innovation Center at Fraunhofer IPA, adds: “Low threshold offers for businesses have always been a cornerstone of the AI progress Innovation center as a transfer mechanism at Cyber Valley. We are also meeting this need though the study series.”

The studies are now available to download (in German) from the AI Progress Innovation Center website. Currently, Tthe two Fraunhofer Institutes will present the individual studies in greater detail and in a range of formats such as press releases as well as social media and blog posts in the coming weeks. English translations will follow over the next few weeksof two studies are available: “Explainable AI in Practice” and “Reliable AI”.
