Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO
Dear Sir or Madam,

How can municipalities in Germany implement sustainable concepts with digital means as quickly as possible? How can cultural institutions such as museums also use digital technologies and smart services to shape the future visitor experience?

The digitalization push triggered by the Corona crisis has released creative impulses for different challenges. Whether in the fight against climate change or for sustainable urban development, our experts are developing a wide range of solutions in various projects to steer digitalization in the right direction. What can the production industry learn from the crisis? This is the question we explored at the digital conference re:publica remote, which was held online for the first time.

The topic "home office" continues to accompany us, also in our research work. With the "Corona Home Office Test", our researchers want to analyze the way we worked before the pandemic in comparison to the current situation.

Our newsletter will provide you with further red-hot reading material over the summer: A publication summarizing the results of the cross-media project "2049: Time Travel Mobility" is awaiting you on the future of mobility.

I cordially invite you to share your own experiences working from home in our current survey and wish you many more good ideas and courage for the future.

Kind regards

Dr. Stephan Wilhelm
Head of Marketing and Communication

Catalyst for sustainable cities and regions
The Fraunhofer Morgenstadt initiative highlights strategic measures that aim to achieve broad implementation of digital and sustainable urban development

Cities are some of the biggest emitters of CO2 – and that makes them a powerful lever in the fight against global warming. The team behind the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft’s Morgenstadt initiative recently published a position paper that aims to help German municipalities fast-track the implementation of sustainable urban development and digitalization. The goal of this new publication is to pool existing solutions, make them accessible and financially viable for municipalities and cities everywhere, and create new capacities.

Virtual reality can assist with the evaluation of future transport concepts
A new study from Fraunhofer IAO presents the results of a VR-based method for forecasting new technology and evaluating the acceptance of future urban transport concepts
In a multimedia project – “2049: Zeitreise Mobilität” – conducted together with the German regional broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk, Fraunhofer IAO has used virtual reality to send test persons on a journey through time to German and U.S. cities in the year 2049. The concluding study shows which future transport concepts meet with acceptance and are regarded as realistic. When it comes to tomorrow’s transport, however, different generations do not always agree on which attributes are most desirable.

The coronavirus home office survey: How well are we working from home?
The coronavirus home office survey, along with immediate feedback on respondents’ answers, will feed into a study based on an analysis of the current work situation and its impact on employee collaboration and wellbeing
People working from home are currently being asked to take part in a survey by Fraunhofer IAO on their current work situation. Its purpose is to analyze the quality of collaboration with colleagues and research partners, to gauge respondents’ wellbeing and to evaluate the quality of their work. A study based on this survey will then make inferences with regard to a range of factors as well as future developments.
